I am a Woman

I am a woman
I am an entity.
Not meant to have a life
No hopes, no aspirations
for me.

I am a woman
I become a liability
If I dare to scream
If I dare to dream.

I am a woman
I am a thing to be owned
A thing to be trained
A thing to be maimed.

I am a woman
I can not laugh out loud
Can not be outspoken
I can not be proud.

I am a woman
I should cook, wash and feed
If I choose to be different
I become a healthy garden’s weed.

I am a woman
I can not choose a life for me
Others will dictate it
The way they want it to be.

I am a woman
But like them, I am human too
A heart also beats inside me
I am also alive, yes its true.

Even in chains, I am a woman
And a woman I will always be
The day is not far away
When I’ll finally break free.

Then they will scream, they will shout
They will sigh and cry
But I will be far, far away
Flying high into the sky.

Yes, I am a woman
And I will be free.

  1. good work indeed!I wish it (subjugation of women) were not true largely. but portraying only the 'bechari' image of women is in a bad taste. Hope to listen/read a piece where the reflection of woman like --Laksmi bai, Durga, Indira Nui and many other mighty women are essayed. No doubt women have been subject to torture but they have also been elevate to power and loved as well -Taj and many other monuments are strongly advocating that. Towards the end the poem is very positive which talks of emancipation that is really superb.
